LOVE, LABOR, LOSS is pleased to present the 15-minute Advocacy Video, narrated by Tonya Pinkins with music
by Zap Mama. The Advocacy Video is available to NGOs, community groups and individuals who are interested
in hosting a screening to help raise awareness and/or funds for fistula or related programs. It is a good resource to help explain to audiences
what fistula is, how it develops, how it can be treated and prevented, and what individuals can do to help in the fight to end fistula. Interviews with Niger's First Lady, Representative Carolyn Maloney, representatives from
UNFPA and EngenderHealth help give perspective to the global scope of the problem while emphasizing specific challenges in Niger.
The Advocacy Video has been screened nationwide in a variety of venues, reaching diverse audiences who may or may not know of fistula or other pressing women's health issues. It debuted during the Beijing +10 conference
that occured at the United Nations in New York from February 28-March 11, 2005. In its efforts to help support legislation in favor of fistula programs, the Advocacy Video was used during a briefing in Capitol Hill with
Representative Carolyn Maloney. In September and October 2005, LOVE, LABOR, LOSS collaborated
with Grammy-nominated artist Zap Mama on The WOMAN Tour, reaching thousands of college students and young professionals with film screenings and musical performances during Zap Mama's
three-week U.S. Tour. In 2006, LOVE, LABOR, LOSS was chosen as one of ten Best of Film for the International Museum on Women's Imagining Ourselves online exhibit. The film continues to be screened in collaboration with universities,
activist groups and women's health organizations.
QUOTES:
From participants at the National Youth Leadership Forum:
"It really showed me how problems in other countries affect everyone worldwide. It increased my awareness and encouraged me to help others and also work as a team to solve problems in the community."
"Lisa's presentation was extremely informative, thought-provoking and emotional. She definitely exemplifies the broad range of ways you can reach the public and raise awareness for not only global health issues, but she is an inspiration for young people seeking to change."
"It was really nice to become more aware of a common affliction that is so overlooked. Lisa Russell is a powerful speaker that inspired me to do a fundraiser in my school for obstetric fistula."
