About obstetric fistula.
Obstetric fistula is a devastating, yet preventable and largely treatable childbirth injury caused by a prolonged, obstructed labor.
Without treatment, fistula often leads to social, physical, emotional and economic decline. Although some women with fistula display amazing courage and resilience, many others succumb to illness and despair.
Fortunately, there are many free, surgical repair programs available to women living with fistula. However, one of the biggest obstacles to accessing those services is lack of transportation to the facilities.
Mobile phones provide an unprecedented opportunity to help women with fistula, particularly in the rural areas, to overcome this barrier and receive treatment that will restore their dignity and transform their lives.LEARN MORE

About mobile phones.
Mobile phones are revolutionizing healthcare in many parts of the world today. From SMS texts delivering health education messages and training for healthcare personnel, to the use of mobile banking to transfer funds to assist individuals in need of healthcare services, the mobile phone is connecting the healthcare sector with individuals and families in a way that has never been imagined before.
What does this have to do with fistula?
For women living with this horrendous childbearing injury that often leaves them incontinent and stripped of a dignified and productive life, mobile phones have tremendous potential to help connect the nearly 2 million women currently living with fistula with free fistula repair programs and also, may help prevent the nearly 50,000-100,000 new cases that emerge each year.
Innovative programs such as the CCBRT Hospital in Tanzania, the Freedom From Fistula Foundation in Kenya and the Aberdeen Women’s Center in Sierra Leone are using mobile phones to reach and empower this population who have largely been ignored.
We believe that this new technology has the power to make a major, transformative impact in the lives of women and girls suffering from fistula if such mobile programs can be replicated and expanded by other fistula programs.
The mFistula campaign hopes to share good practices of programs using mobile phones to assist women living with fistula and encourage new ideas.LEARN MORE
